CEO message – February 2025
A message from Janise Mitchell
Dear supporters,
Over the summer break, I took time to reflect on the immense challenges children and young people continue to face - and how we can create real, lasting change. What more can we do to make a difference that endures?
Many never receive the vital support they need to heal, grow, and feel safe. Research - including our own - shows that it often takes decades for someone to speak about their experiences of child abuse, so many go without help. It is critical that we shine a light on this reality and work together to change it.
I was deeply privileged to support Jelena Dokic on her new documentary Unbreakable: the Jelena Dokic story. Unbreakable is the story of how Jelena survived as a refugee, twice. How she survived on the tennis court to become world No. 4. But, most importantly, how she survived her father, Damir Dokic, who perpetrated abuse towards her from a young age. Ultimately, it’s the story of how the tennis world and a nation of fans chose to look away when Jelena needed them most.
Children should not bear the responsibility of ensuring their own safety, including in sports. Adults need to take responsibility in every community to protect children from abuse, neglect, and violence.
I encourage you to watch the full documentary, steaming free on 9Now, and help us spread the word. With your critical support, we can work towards a future where no child has to carry the burden of trauma into adulthood.
As we look ahead, it is our hope to leave a lasting legacy through our work - one that ensures children and young people receive the support they need to heal and thrive. If you too are thinking about your legacy this year, we are working with Safewill to offer free Will-writing services in February. Read on to learn how you can leave a bequest to protect future generations.
In this newsletter, you will also see the incredible impact your existing support has made possible. Every achievement we share is a reflection of your generosity and commitment to protecting children and supporting families across Australia.
Because of you, we can amplify the voices of those who need to be heard, advocate for change, and stand up for the safety and wellbeing of children in our communities. Thank you for being part of this vital work.
With our warmest thanks,
Janise Mitchell
