CEO message – November 2024

A message from Janise Mitchell

Dear supporters,

I want to express my deepest thanks to each of you for your unwavering support. It’s because of you that we’re able to continue our critical work with children, young people, and families who have experienced the trauma of abuse, violence, and neglect.

Recently, the ABC featured the story of Claire* and her children, who found hope and healing through the Foundation after escaping Claire’s abusive partner. As I shared during my interview for the story, “Kids don’t naturally sit and talk about their problems like adults do, particularly younger kids. If the violence has happened before they’ve developed language, it’s really hard for them to talk about those experiences.”

For Claire and her children, the journey didn’t end when they left their abuser. The trauma they experienced showed up in different ways, including one of Claire’s children having violent meltdowns.

Feeling isolated and desperate, they turned to us for support.

Through trauma-informed play therapy, Claire and her children began to heal and reconnect. As children start to feel safe, they smile, laugh, and rediscover the joy of childhood. Seeing this transformation is why we do what we do. This work is only possible because of donors like you.

As we approach the end of the year, I’m excited to let you know that our Christmas appeal is just around the corner. We’ll share with you a story about a little girl named Maya. It will also provide an opportunity for you to continue making an incredible difference in the lives of Australia’s most vulnerable children. You’ll find out more in the coming weeks.

In addition to our hands-on work with children and families, we are also advocating for a Federal Minister for Children. A report of child abuse, neglect, or family violence is made nearly every minute in Australia. (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare 2024)

This is not a number we should tolerate – these children need help, now. The issues they face each day are urgent, and we believe a Federal Minister is essential to prioritise their needs and ensure their voices are heard.

We are backing a petition to make this a reality, and we would love your support. Signing the petition can help us push for the change children desperately need. Thank you for standing with us and the children we support.

With our warmest thanks,

Janise Mitchell
